Did Poland win the Battle of Britan.
I have a rather mouthy Polish colleague who is telling everyone that the Polish Servicemen had a higher kill rate and were far more accurate than our brave lads. He also claims that the BBC are planning a program backing up this claim.

Would any history buffs care to comment at all on this assertion, preferably to the opposite.

He also once said that some Dinosaurs had more than one brain, so his track record is a bit poor.

I do agree with him that Poland is responsible for Cheesecake and Kevlar... But this is too much for me.

The Poles were fighting for themselves, not for us. Contrast the millions of Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans and Indians who fought for us when there was no direct threat to their distant countries, but who are not allowed to live here despite having much greater cultural or family links with us than Poles.

So, Oak Leaves, given you mention the 88mm howitzer, one can assume it was some unit of Rommel's Deasert Rats your chap's mortar crew had been "abandoned" to by the Polish infantry "division" they were "supporting".

Does said ridge or engagement have a name? Initial Google checks have drawn a "blank", if you get my "drift".

Nope wasn't that one. It was the one they fcked off and left a mortar battery abandoned on a ridge. That was doesn't mention anything about our blokes.
A plant. Like a big oak tree or a little red cabbage

Re: Did Poland win the Battle of Britan.
I think this is the battle your mate was referring to:

'In the mountains above Cassino, the aptly named Mount Calvary (Monte Calvario, or Point 593 on Snakeshead Ridge) was taken by the Poles only to be recaptured by German paratroops.[59] For three days Polish attacks and German counterattacks brought heavy losses to both sides. Polish II Corps lost 281 officers and 3,503 other ranks in assaults on Oberst Ludwig Heilmann's 4th Parachute Regiment, until the attacks were called off.[60] "Just eight hundred Germans had succeeded in driving off attacks by two divisions,"[61] the area around the mountain having turned into a "miniature Verdun".[citation needed] In the early morning hours of 12 May, the Polish infantry divisions were met with "such devastating mortar, artillery, and small-arms fire that the leading battalions were all but wiped out."[62]'

A week later:

'On 17 May, Polish II Corps launched their second attack on Monte Cassino. Under constant artillery and mortar fire from the strongly fortified German positions and with little natural cover for protection, the fighting was fierce and at times hand-to-hand. With their line of supply threatened by the Allied advance in the Liri valley, the Germans decided to withdraw from the Cassino heights to the new defensive positions on the Hitler Line.[65] In the early hours of 18 May the British 78th Division and Polish II Corps linked up in the Liri valley 2 miles (3.2 km) west of Cassino town. On the Cassino high ground the survivors of the second Polish offensive were so battered that "it took some time to find men with enough strength to climb the few hundred yards to the summit."[66] A patrol of Polish 12th Podolian Polish cavalry Regiment finally made it to the heights and raised a Polish flag over the ruins.[65] The only remnants of the defenders were a group of thirty[65] German wounded who had been unable to move. "The Poles, on their second try, had taken Monte Cassino, and the road to Rome was open."[66]'

Bunch of pansies...

The poles were charging tanks with horses and lances at the start. I think the brave ones copped it then.

Ah right. I just assumed he must have told you in the pub. So, not drunk, just sticking his sandwiches up his nose. Makes him a very reliable witness.

And before you kick off, I'm not maligning his courage, which I'm sure exceeds mine by several degrees of magnitude, but his reliability as an arbiter of whether the Poles were a bunch of cowards, which your re-telling of his story seems to imply.

See surface you make things up... It was the fella I worked with.. Sober as.. But then he had a bit of shell shock.. Well ya would. Stuck on a ridge being shot at.. But fair play to him.. Maybe the poles could give us some money towards paying the septics for the money we borrowed.

Re: Did Poland win the Battle of Britan.
You should point out to your Polish friend that the Poles may well have done well in the Battle of Britain but they completely fucked up the Battle of Poland!

If they'd have performed better there, we could have stayed at home. It was only the Germans after all!

Re: Did Poland win the Battle of Britan.
Ah! Everybody else noticed 'along with every other army engaged in WW2'. Clearly it went over your head. So nothing anti-British there.

So we are left with: every reputable military historian v. your drunk and embittered old mate in the boozer.

That just about wraps it up for the reputation of the Polish army in WW2.
